The title of the first novel by Nikolai Tabakov „Lost Generation“ is a term invented by Gertrud Stein and popularized by Earnest Hemingway. It was coined to describe the disillusionment of a generation of young literary modernists, who lived in Paris after the First World War. In the case of Nikolai Tabakov’s book the title refers to the generation that was growing up during communism in Bulgaria, the generation „that fell into the years of the biggest lie“, which the author describes with remarkable humor, perception and compassion. There is profoundness about this book that could be credited to the influence of Tabakov’s favorite author – another one of the lost generation – J. D. Salinger.
